CATS: The Mandatory 4 Day Hold
The following analysis was produced using animal records requested from
Kern County Animal Control.
These numbers reflect animal impounds for each month and final outcomes for each.
The bar graph above shows the number of CATS euthanized on the day of impound and
during the 4 day legal hold period (Orange), after the 4 day hold period (Red) and
all other outcomes (Blue). All Other Outcomes being Adoptions, Rescues, Died, Transfers, etc…
* The 4 Day Hold Period by law does not include the day of impound BUT here we will include it.
Prior to the November 10th court order a monthly average of 776 cats were being euthanized during the

After the November 10th court order a monthly average of 196 cats were being euthanized during the
* The 4 Day Hold Period.
By the Numbers
From Jan03 through Sep04 an AVERAGE of over 500 cats were being euthanized on the day of impound each month
( shown in red above ).
The November 2004 Superior Court Order requiring Kern County to obey CA State Law and hold animals
the mandatory 4 days before euthanasia resulted in death for far fewer cats on the day of impound.
From Jan05 through Sep06 an AVERAGE of 170 cats were being euthanized on the day of impound every month
( shown in black above ).

From Jan03 through Sep04 a TOTAL of 10,731 cats were euthanized on the day of impound
( shown in red above ).
